Does Anybody Know What Day It Is?

International Whale Day. Groundhog Day. Administrative Assistant’s Day. Mother’s Day. Penguin Awareness Day. World Cancer Day. Love Your Pet Day. Valentine’s Day. Flag Day. Veteran’s Day. Turtle Day. Patriot Day.

Okay, suffice it to say, there is a “day” for just about anything, any cause, any reason, any season. Now I am not saying that the whales, cancer, pets, flags, mothers and fathers, stepmothers and stepfathers, inlaws and outlaws, potbelly pigs, endangered silver-footed lizards, veterans and all the other groups out there should not be recognized or celebrated.

What I am saying is ‘where does it end’ and WHEN is your Day?

Maybe you have more days to yourself now that you are a Queenager. Lucky you. Maybe you don’t with your volunteering, learning new things, caring for an aging parent or a grandchild.

What I am saying is make it a Me Day! Take time for yourself.

Now you are thinking, “Who is she kidding? I am looking down a very long tunnel of ‘to dos;’ in fact, there may not even be a light at the end of that tunnel. She’s nuts!”

Feel like buying something, ANYTHING?, on Amazon? Use this link and PGCS will get a percent to help a woman struggling with cancer.

Won’t be the first time someone has thought that of me and if you stick around, you will probably come to agree at times that is true.

Studies have shown that a mere ten minutes a day of meditating or walking in your ‘hood is beneficial. Petting your furry friends can lower your blood pressure. Just breathing in a slow and steady rhythm can help one focus. While jetting out to Sedona for a week at the spa du jour would be heavenly – face it – very few of us get this opportunity.

What’s the point? Learn to make those ‘me moments’ and soon you will have a ‘Me Day!’ However you choose to take care of yourself, it all goes back to this….if you don’t do it, who will and how will you manage if you cannot do it?

Not an easy answer. Certainly not done overnight. Impossible? No.

Start small and keep at it. Own the ‘you’ you are now since it’s the only one you have.

Sue marks her life in two segments--BC and AC--no, not the renowned Southern headache powder or air conditioning (for which she will be forever grateful). BC and AC denote her life ‘before cancer’ and ‘after cancer.’ Before her diagnosis of ovarian cancer at 51, life had been as she had envisioned-college, marriage, job, travel….all the good stuff.

AC took some getting used to put it mildly. Now she spends her time still doing the good stuff, but now with purpose as she runs a nonprofit dedicated to helping women undergoing treatment for any gynecological cancer. She knows it is the what she is supposed to be doing.

In her spare time, she exercises, walks her dog, Molly, cooks with friends, enjoys painting, re-purposing found stuff and boating with her husband on Lake Lanier in north Georgia. She wears the crown of Queenager proudly and is never seen without earrings!

  1. I enjoyed the article, thanks. Good advice and a good morning reminder. Kind of like putting the oxygen mask on yourself first before saving others. Those airlines figured it out…we should too.
