Ask the Pro: Makeup Tips for the Queenager in You

Not being a makeup expert, nor much of a makeup wearer myself, I wondered what can I write about wearing makeup? I like makeup, but I wear it sparingly and not every day (except I did get eyelash extensions). When I’m going out in public, especially as I have grown older, I try to apply blush, mascara, lips, etc. so as not to frighten the store clerks (LOL).

That being said, there are a zillion great blogs, vlogs and articles online and from beauty magazines on wearing makeup (maybe not specifically for the Queenager, but for anyone). As an example, recently for Allure Magazine, Lady Gaga offered some inspiring ideas on wearing makeup (What else is there to say?).

Well there’s this:

I asked Michael Perich, the owner and founder of Perich, an all natural skincare and makeup line that wins raves from its fans, for his tips for the 50+ year-old on wearing makeup. Perich has been a professional makeup artist for 25 years and has worked with a number of big stars, including Joan Rivers, one of the most ultimate trailblazing queenagers of all time!

The question for Michael: “Regardless of ones’ personal style regarding make up (ie wear it, don’t wear it, wear a little, wear a lot), what is the number one thing in your opinion that Queenagers should practice daily when it comes to make up?”

Michael’s answer:

Michael Perich owns The Gnome Colony in Glen Ellyn, Ill., where a queenager can procure her crown and his own all natural makeup line, Perich, also available online.

“After 25 years as a professional makeup artist, I say the golden rule is that makeup is not about hiding or covering who you are, it is about enhancing your own god-given natural feminine beauty and expressing how you feel internally externally through the process.

Makeup is not about hiding or covering who you are, it is about enhancing your own god-given natural feminine beauty

Michael Perich

“Remember, people will always have their own opinions based out of insecurity of you and how you look regardless of anything you project, say or do. Do what makes you FEEL happy!

“You are putting makeup on your face to express yourself, not a tattoo…It washes off! Learn your own style and master your own techniques. The world is full of copycats so stay original and true to who you are.

“The saying “A woman’s prerogative…” exists for a reason. Do not know what it means? Look it up.”

So I did! As an official Queenager, I think that’s advice I can definitely take to heart when it comes to wearing makeup.

  1. Great points! I learned most of my make-up tips from Glamour Magazine back in the day. I’m no professional, but have done friends for special events, and even a teenager for her prom 2 years ago. These days for tips I also like two vlogs on You Tube that I have NO affiliation with but are useful: “Dominique Sachse” is an Anchor news person somewhere with good makeup and hair tutorials; I’ve also used “Hot And Flashy” tutorials. And honestly have liked at “Kylie Jenner” who is a celebrity and very young but has grown up with makeup and knows it shockingly well.
