When You’re Alone on a Holiday: Get out and See the Fireworks!

I want to talk about fireworks. Not the kind you get when you’re in love, exactly, but more on that later. I’m talking about the kind you see on the 4th of July holiday and about the 4th of July specifically!

Some love it, some don’t care and some only care about the day off of work.

It’s worth it to get out and do something. Don’t just sit in the house!

I love it …Yes, the fireworks, the day of sun, hitting the beach and all that local towns offer like parades, parties, and more. I am patriotic and maybe that’s why I love the 4th as well.

Plus, another birthday and celebration (even if it’s the USA’s) is always a wonderful time to let loose and just enjoy summer which goes so fast, so soak it up now. But what if you’re not with your family? Then what?

Growing Up and the Fourth

When I grew up, I remember July Fourth nights with mixed feelings. One year I literally had to wear sunglasses when I went to bed because it was so early and yes that meant I would not be seeing the fireworks.

My parents were not big fans of our local celebrations which I loved including decorating our bikes and pedaling down the street in the town parade, as well as dressing in everything red, white and blue.

When I was a teen, I ventured out to the grassy hill in my town (Note: a lot of towns in flat Illinois create these, so there’s a slope to sled down in the winter). We set up blankets and fought the wave of voracious mosquitos that would begin our summer long “scratchathon” with Bactine spray to minimize the itchiness.

Most importantly, I saw the glorious fireworks!! That is, I tried to see them in between the big pines and trees surrounding the fields. Parties followed all evening long, along with the scratching.

Fireworks with Little Ones-Children or Grandchildren

Later, as parents we are limited because for some children (and grandchildren) fireworks are terrifying and lead to covering of ears and the fear-filled crying until the kiddos crash in bed for the night. Not the best July Fourth era during those years.

My children grew to love it all too. Now that they are young adults, they are all out of town celebrating with their own gangs and I am on my own.

Doing the 4th–Or Any Holiday–On Your Own

Here in California, there are usually great beach gatherings and fun regattas of floaties on the beaches with a spattering of celebs as well. The bay fireworks are spectacular and are worth every minute with 3-5 displays all going off at once and more in the distance.

There aren’t any bugs biting nor trees to block the show, thankfully in this incredible area.

Del Mar Race Track has a phenomenal show which I will be watching with friends. So, grab your favorite huggie for your drink, something or somebody to keep you warm and just enjoy.

A little outdoor is something we all need to do a little more of. Even if it’s just with one friend or your spouse/significant other, it’s worth it to get out and do something. Don’t just sit in the house!

I never miss the display of lights and find that I am in a minority when it comes to adults.

One year after watching the fireworks, one of my friend’s husband stated his devotion and love of the fireworks as well which has forever stuck in my mind, so I know that I am not alone.

Maybe I like them so much because it makes me feel like a kid for just an instant as the lights shine in the sky and everyone ooohs, and ahhhs and sighs in awe.

Whatever you do, I wish you and our country the best birthday celebration ever.
